THERAPEUTIC GARDEN
Conceptual planting design for a holistic addiction treatment centre
Research shows that spending time in nature has tremendous benefits on mental health - specifically addiction, depression and anxiety. The garden was designed for a world-leading mental health provider specialising in substance abuse to help patients to reach their recovery goals at their new holistic addiction treatment centre.
The garden seeks to take patients on an immersive journey of recovery and self-discovery – inviting exploration and helping them on this transformational path. A series of meandering pathways thread through distinct planted areas – where feelings can be embraced and recognised through an emotional tapestry of planting.
The journey starts with ‘Reflection and Contemplation’ – a soothing space designed to give comfort and clarity. It provides a sanctuary – cocooned by greenery – with a reflective pool and grounding evergreen planting. The path continues through an avenue of silver birches underplanted with white woodland style planting inviting contemplation and connection with the natural world. A more open area for ‘Realising and Releasing Anger’ includes naturalistic perennial planting with dynamic sweeps and seasonal waves of hot colour, before moving into a space of ‘Gratitude and Serenity’. This is a tranquil and calming part of the garden – intended to evoke nature and the spirit of the local landscape with a wildflower meadow, orchard and wildlife pond.
